New Hampshire's Most Influential Newspaper Endorses Gingrich

Regardless of the inevitable spin that will come from the Romney campaign, this is quite the poke in the eye for Mitt. They even went out of their way to take a veiled shot at his "finger in the wind" tendencies.

I don't think this will spell victory in New Hampshire for Gingrich, but it may end up being a lot closer than it should be in a state that Mitt calls home.
This newspaper endorses Newt Gingrich in the New Hampshire Presidential Primary.

America is at a crucial crossroads. It is not going to be enough to merely replace Barack Obama next year. We are in critical need of the innovative, forward-looking strategy and positive leadership that Gingrich has shown he is capable of providing.

He did so with the Contract with America. He did it in bringing in the first Republican House in 40 years and by forging balanced budgets and even a surplus despite the political challenge of dealing with a Democratic President. A lot of candidates say they're going to improve Washington. Newt Gingrich has actually done that, and in this race he offers the best shot of doing it again.

(...)

Readers of the Union Leader and Sunday News know that we don't back candidates based on popularity polls or big-shot backers. We look for conservatives of courage and conviction who are independent-minded, grounded in their core beliefs about this nation and its people, and best equipped for the job.

We don't have to agree with them on every issue. We would rather back someone with whom we may sometimes disagree than one who tells us what he thinks we want to hear.

Newt Gingrich is by no means the perfect candidate. But Republican primary voters too often make the mistake of preferring an unattainable ideal to the best candidate who is actually running. In this incredibly important election, that candidate is Newt Gingrich. He has the experience, the leadership qualities and the vision to lead this country in these trying times. He is worthy of your support on January 10.

Mitt Romney, however, who is ahead in the polls in a state where he has invested years campaign, had worked hard to court Union Leader officials. Reid Epstein took a memorable picture of Romney sitting next to McQuaid at a recent UL-sponsored Manchester event, in stark contrast to Herman Cain, who had blown off the paper's editorial board meeting after his campaign couldn't agree with the paper on the length of the interview.

Romney has assiduously courted the paper, and so it remains to be seen whether all that effort amounts to a lessening of the editorial page's boosting of Gingrich (and any negativity about Romney), especially after 2007, when the paper endorsed McCain and was sharply critical of the former neighbor state governor.

The best outcome for Romney would have been an endorsement, but the second-best would be a bit of restraint in the paper's approach to him.

Republicans are idiots.

We can't beat Obama with nothing.

I may have to vote third party, when I would love to vote against Obama.

But I will never vote for anyone with so little personal character as Newt Gingrich.

Does NH love Obama?

It seems like the Union leader likes to endorse old fossils who live their lives as career politicians and Washington Insiders who support amnesty. After all they did endorse McCain in 2008...oh and he lost.

If Newt gets the nomination it will be 2008 all over again...we will see another old belligerent pig parading his bleach blond wife around the country pandering for votes. Wow I am so enthused-NOT!

Newt is busy bulking up so that he can be Sen. Stephen Douglas debating Obama's Lincoln from Illinois.
Has anybody really noticed how old Gingrich looks? He is getting in to the Ron Paul generation but he still remembers his date with destiny 20 years ago
It will be interesting to see if the UL runs the vetting that is coming on the Neuter. Not like McCain 8 years ago. There is a LOT of baggage on this old fossil and well see if Joe prints any of it

Just one more comment...I read that Rick Perry was their 2nd choice..Romney didn't even make the cut, much like the Evangelicals in Iowa.

Gingrich is a bigger flip flopper than Romney and he gets a pass but the paper holds Romney's feet to the fire-Why is there this double standard?

People have to remember that these papers are owned by corporations and people who have special interests.

Amnesty loving McCain won their endorsement in 2008 and now the humane amnesty promoting Gingrich gets their nomination with "you don't have a heart" Perry coming in 2nd.....does anyone see a trend?

2 key phrases that caught my eye that I agree with:

We would rather back someone with whom we may sometimes disagree than one who tells us what he thinks we want to hear.

We look for conservatives of courage and conviction ...

The Union Leader endorsed McCain the last time. Are they a little confused with the McCain, Gingrich similarities?

Both Gingrinch and McCain are short, tubby, and gray haired, just on their physical appearance. Now to the political, they're both career politicians, with make-you-squirm personal baggage and snarky and condescending turn-off attitudes for the big topper.

This Union leader knows how to pick winners.

....Except Gingrich is no conservative..he's a big government progressive who will sell out the U.S. to the highest bidder.

Gingrich has profited from Big Government so why in the world would he wish to reduce the size and scope of government. Gingrich's solutions are government solutions not free market solutions. The man has never worked in the private sector..he is an academic just like Obama.

They also supported Steve Forbes and Pat Buchanan.

That tells you something.

Interestingly, they did not support any of the policies that Gingrich has been years shilling for. hmmm.

Meanwhile Romney got Sununu and Ayotte, a former Governor and a popular Senator.

Well if that is the case they would be better of picking Bachmann than Gingrich. Gingrich is not exactly honest...right now he is telling those hispanic voters what they want to hear.

This is the paper that got behind McCain in '08. Gingrich is this cycle's McCain. We've already seen how an Obama handles a McCain. And we've already--as a party--lamented passing on Romney.

Let's not do this again. Romney 2012, please!

doesnt mean a thing. Here in Florida we have papers that are big, but bottom line are liberal and the liberals know Gingrich can not gain enough blue dog dems and independents to win and this is why they do this

"right now he is telling those Hispanic voters what they want to hear." True, like Mr. Romney is telling White Suburbanite what they want to hear. Both are panderers.

One huge difference is Gingrich does it with his pants off. (and with anything younger than his current wife)
