PERRY and FLORIDA

I caught a headline in a Miami paper that caused me to pause a bit and reflect on where we are going this election:

" RICK PERRY GETS ENDORSEMENT OF FLORIDA'S TOP ANTI - GAY CRUSADER"

It brings to mind an old comment that I remember from a long time ago when McCarthyism was rampant in the country. Senator Margaret Chase Smith, the GOP Senator from Maine said

" The country needs a Republican victory. But I do not want to see the Republicans ride to victory on the Four Horseman of Calumny:
FEAR
IGNORANCE
BIGOTRY
SMEAR "

I typed that comment down over 50 years ago when I read it after the fact. Senator Chase was right then and she is right today. If extremism takes over the GOP there is no place in it for me.

Perry CANNOT win the general election against Obama.

Republicans who are like me (conservative on fiscal issues, libertarian-leaning on social issues) -- to say nothing of Independents -- will simply not vote for him for President of the United States. He is absurdly unprepared and temperamentally unsuited to assume that role in the nation and the world.

Sad to say, Perry has already done major damage to all Republicans' chances of success in 2012. Down-ballot Republicans in every race will be targeted by their Democrat opponents as "wanting to do away with Social Security." This tactic has worked many times in the past.

Now, thanks to Perry, Democrats have their hands on videotapes and direct quotations supporting, in spades, the proposition that this leading Republican -- and, by extension, Republicans as a whole -- want to get rid of Social Security.

See how that flies in November 2012.
