FLORIDA, RICK PERRY and EDUCATION

Click to graph to ENLARGE
Mike Thomas, writing in the Orlando Sentinel this morning, has a great article on Rick Perry's mounting problems in Florida. The article focuses on JEB BUSH and his role as " one of the most influential voices in educational reform"
Massachusetts and Florida have taken the lead in developing a new standard for Math and Language Arts called "The Common Core ." It is the basis of a program called "Race To The Top" designed to improve performance standards of American schools.
Jeb Bush is a strong supporter of the Race To The Top program and Common Core.

** Rick Perry has taken the lead in rejecting Common Core

** Rick Perry halted the pursuit of $ 700 million in Race To The Top funding for Texas
schools despite massive cuts in the state educational budget that required Texas tax
increases. He calls the program a " Federal Takeover of Public Schools." Jeb Bush is a
leading proponent of Federal support for school improvement

** Rick Perry opposes the renewal of NCLB ( No Child Left Behind ), calling it a " Monstrous
intrusion into our affairs." Jeb Bush is a loud and vociferous supporter of NCLB,
his
brothers education legacy

Schools are Jeb Bush's signature issue.
Jeb Bush is wonkish, bipartisan and driven by testing data
Rick Perry is a policy lightweight, highly partisan and rigidly ideological
Jeb Bush believes there is a significant role for Washington to play in education.
Rick Perry does not

There is probably no way Jeb Bush endorses Rick Perry for the Florida primary. It is
much more likely he will endorse Mitt Romney or Jon Huntsman

I'll side with Perry on this one. Education should be a state and local issue.

Craig, why do you keep posting Perry material that is favorable in the minds of GOP primary voters? Are you sure you're not a Democrat?

Great post craig,

With Texas being last in those with high school diplomas and first in Dream act instate tuition credits for illegals, I can honestly say I'm not surprised.

My guess is education isn't a major issue with those that support Perry....if you get my drift?

Sorry, but I believe education is a national issue.....unless you want to fight the civil war over again. I know Perry muses some times about secession, so that Texas would not have to be part of the national landscape.....but the idea of 50 states with 50 separate educational standards and 50 separate levels of educational achievement and 50 different levels of funding is a LONG way from the idea of America and E Pluribus Unum.
About as screwy as 50 separate kinds of currency. I still have some Georgia dollars from 1863.
You may be with Perry on this one. He doesn't seem to be a big fan of learning, in general, and Texas' statistics prove his point. Sorry, but education is important to me. If that makes me a Democrat and Jeb Bush a Democrat and you a Republican, so be it.

"Sorry, but I believe education is a national issue.." And that is what makes it difficult to take you seriously. America has become the world laughing stock in education ever since Mr. Carter implemented the Department of Education.

" About as screwy as 50 separate kinds of currency. I still have some Georgia dollars from 1863." Sorry, but that is a crazy argument. Many countries have one currencies, but several education systems. Ideally, education should be privatized so that we have competition like other industries. The education of our children is too important to leave it up to government hacks.

Shhhhh, it is that kind of talk that helped put Mr. Perry in first place.

OJ,

"Shhhhh, it is that kind of talk that helped put Mr. Perry in first place."

And his state in last place!

Your comments sound plausible....but they are factually untrue. I have personally been to more than 80 countries and developed business operations in more than 20. I am VERY familiar with what is happening around the world. Please tell me which countries have more than 1 educational system where results are better than those in the United States. By one educational system, I mean , of course, a system or set of standards that are in place throughout the country. Also, please tell me what DOE guidelines in Washington have made the United States the laughing stock of the world?
Before you answer, I'll give you some assistance. People like Jeb Bush are trying to work with other states like Massachusetts to come up with standards.....but as long as you have a polyglot educational system where funding is local, based upon property taxes, you will have, essentially 50, 500 5000 or 50,000 different educational environments producing wide disparity not only from state to state but within states....further compounded by a teacher's union uninterested in anything other than protecting its sinecures in 50 states.
Big QUESTION for you. Rick Perry has worked night and day to distance Texas public schools from national standards, quality standards, teacher standards, etc. He has been hard at work for 12 years on this. EXACTLY, what has he accomplished compared to the other 49 states ????
