Run, Jim, Run

Maybe DeMint does intend to provide an assist to Romney? Of course, he might really think he has a snowflake's chance of becoming President (he does not), but a DeMint run would only help the guy who he supported in 2008.

First, it would greatly diminish the importance of South Carolina. I have long argued that South Carolina should be replaced by Florida, but a DeMint run will do just fine. South Carolinians can vote for him, while nobody else does.

Second, it further dilutes the Fox News vote. Between DeMint, Bachmann, Palin (?), Cain, Santorum, and Newt, Tea Partiers will find themselves in quite a pickle on who to throw away their vote on. Meanwhile, mainstream Republicans will be voting for Romney or Pawlenty.

Third, DeMint's prior support of Romney's health care plan is going to cause the esteemed gentleman from South Carolina a certain level of awkwardness when the subject arises.

Fourth, there is a chance that a failed DeMint run might put an end to his influence within the Republican base. He is arguably the most useless Senator in Congress. A DeMint defeat is a win for Governance Republicans and a loss for Talk Radio Republicans.

There is an epic battle going on between Republicans who want to present America with an alternative set of policies to those of Obama and Republicans who just want to protest. DeMint's run would unwittingly help the former.

Romney / DeMint in 2012!

Will Pablo's head explode if/when Romney picks DeMint as his running mate? Being the VP pick isn't too shabby for the "most useless Senator in Congress."

There is one person DeMint dislikes more than Huckabee. That's Rudy Giuliani.

If Rudy gets in and tries to take votes from Romney, DeMint will come in take the far right/evangelical votes away from the others.

Why is it if someone votes for a candidate that you who don't deem smart enough, they are throwing away their vote? It must be so hard for someone as intellectual as you living in a world with such boorish buffoons.

I cannot stand people who think and act like they are smarter and better than other people. I have come to expect that sort of behavior from liberal snobs...not "Republicans" like you.

Well said A.J.R. I wonder how long it will be until Mr. Pawlenty is demoted by some to the 'unserious crowd?'

Back to the point at hand, I doubt Mr. DeMint will run.

bosman, I am not sure that DeMint is running in order to help Romney. At least, not on purpose. But maybe you are right.

I never said that people who like DeMint are not smart. I did say that DeMint has no chance of winning the presidency and I stand by that proclamation. He only appeals to a small part of the country.

Pablo,

He only needs to play favorite son in SC.

Romney probably could win there as it stands now. If DeMint enters, Romney comes in a STRONG SECOND there.
