PPP Polling: Mitt Romney best choice in SC against Obama

.......The numbers with independents in South Carolina are really telling when it comes to the viability of either a Palin or Gingrich candidacy. They don't like Obama, with only 39% approving of him to 54% who disapprove. But he leads Gingrich by 4 and Palin by 18 with them anyway because they consider him at least to be a better alternative than them. That speaks to one of the greatest truths about this year's race- Obama is certainly vulnerable but a lot of the horses looking at the Republican race aren't going to be able to capitalize on that vulnerability......
.........Republicans should be fine in South Carolina next year so long as they nominate a mainstream candidate. But if they go with one of their weaker ones I'm sure Obama and national Democrats would consider the state to be quite a trophy as part of a national landslide.
Favorable/Unfavorable/Not sure:

Mike Huckabee 48/32/20 (+16)
Jim DeMint 49/34/17 (+15)
Mitt Romney 42/34/24 (+8)
Newt Gingrich 32/46/21 (-14)
Sarah Palin 34/58/8 (-24)

Head-To-Head (Obama/Candidate/Undecided):

Mitt Romney 42/49/9 (+7)
Mike Huckabee 43/49/8 (+6)
Jim DeMint 45/47/8 (+2)
Newt Gingrich 44/43/12 (-1)
Sarah Palin 47/41/12 (-6)
PPP surveyed 1,167 South Carolina voters from January 28th to 30th. The survey’smargin of error is +/-2.9%. Other factors, such as refusal to be interviewed andweighting, may introduce additional error that is more difficult to quantify.

Wow Sarah Loses AZ, SD & SC. Do you think Alaska would be in play if she runs?

Can she win more than 3 states?

Romney even beats Jim DeMint against Obama and in DeMint's own state.

Romney and Huckabee still leading the pack. It is surprising that they both beat DeMint against Obmaa in DeMint's home state. Romney beats Obama by 7 points, Huckabee beats him by 6 points, and DeMint beats him by 2.

Romney has a 1 point advantage over Huckabee in the head to head against Obama. Huckabee has a 6 point lead over Romney if DeMint is NOT in the race and Mike has a 3 point lead over Mitt if DeMint is in the race.

Within margin of error - I guess we'll have to rely on the campaign to decide - while we continue following polls for trends.

Well said Granny T. So far, (it could all change overnight of course), it looks like the "big 4" of Romney, Huckabee, Palin and Gringrich is really just the big two of Romney and Huckabee.

I thought Romney wasn't supposed to be a formidable candidate in SC. At least that's what many Huckabee supporters have been trying to sell.

I wish some of you would stop criticizing Sarah Palin. She is obviously a nonfactor when it comes to presidential politics as a candidate. Her endorsement, if any, could be quite helpful though!

It's not surprising that Mitt and Mike do better against Obama than anyone else....we've seen that over and over.

What IS surprising is that Mitt runs better against Obama than Mike in SOUTH CAROLINA!! We've seen this in other Southern states, but SC is at the heart of the Huckabee nomination strategy, and right now, things aren't looking all that good for him there.

I guess brains cells in SC have been distributed!

IG,

Palin's endorsement sure didn't help O'Donnell, Miller, Buck, or Angle did it? Her endorsement will be toxic.
