Well, I guess the nomination will come down to Romney and Paul. The rest shouldn't even bother to show up.

And, I'm sorry, but 2nd place is not a win. Mitt had plenty of supporters at the conference as well.

Paul came with 1000 attendees.

Ron Paul paid for more than 1,000 tickets that student supporters could claim for free if they attended. Team Paul is very adept at co-opting this type event.

But amongst the real candidates, the serious souls like Romney/Gingrich/Daniels/Pawlenty/Barbour/Palin/Huck, Romney polled better than those other 6 combined.

I am sorry fellow Romney fans, but Paul has rendered the CPAC completely useless. It was actually useless before since the winner very rarely wins the nomination, but now it is obviously useless since Ron Paul has won twice.

I wonder how much closer the straw poll results at CPAC would have been had Ron Paul not been on the ballot. Paul won and Romney came in a strong 2nd. The rest were barely a blip on the radar. If Paul was not there how many votes would there have been for those who finished in single digits?

I'm glad Romney did well in the poll, but I wish it were a more accurate reflection of the thinking of the likely Republican voters.

Noelle,

All it means is that 2nd place is winning. That's what Paul has done to the CPAC straw poll.

Congratulations Mitt!

Paul and Romney had supporters go there. Paul had more than Romney this time. Maybe next year Romney will have more. The results will still be as meaningless outside the bubble.

Bill,

Vanderbilt had 70 students there for Romney. Hardly an invasion. Paul had over 1000.

TexasConservative,

Are you serious?
Congratulations for What?
Spending $100,000 to bring 1000 students to CPAC to stack the deck?

As a Palin supporter, If it came down to Romney or Paul, I'd vote Romney.

The CPAC poll has become so futile that it shouldn't even be conducted anymore. I can understand Romney coming in second, but seriously Palin and Huckabee getting killed? I don't think so. They should easily be in the top two. Plus do not even get me started on Ron Paul. He's a RINO that needs to stop running failed Presidential campaigns. Doesn't he get it, America does not want him to be President.

I'm disappointed that Mitt only got 10 or 11 times as many votes as Huckabee. Sarah getting 3% was about where she should be.

Congratulations are in order for Pawlenty and Daniels at 4%. They're starting to gain a little traction.

CPAC is where hard-core activists go, and that's why it's such a big deal. Anybody who disses it doesn't understand the process. And the greater audience for it dwarfs the 12,000 who actually attend into insignificance.

This is not to say that Paul has any chance in the Primary. Trump was right in breaking it to the Paulistas gently that Paul can not get elected. He should have added that he can not get nominated.

It's always amusing to read the "sour grapes" responses and the boatload of excuses for poor showings.

The hypocritical double standard is always lurking around as well. Had Romney came in 3rd or scored say 10-15%, the same folks poo-pooing the results now, would be jumping for joy.

We all know Paul is going nowhere, which is why I said the other day, coming in second is the real winner spot.

If other potential candidates didn't show up, perhaps they are not as confident or as good at turning out their supporters, than someelse. Conversly, perhaps the candidates folks think are toast, are a lot stonger than currently percieved.
