GOP heavyweights want Haley Barbour as RNC Chief

According to Politico, There is a draft Haley Barbour movement in the works. Not, for President. It seems they want him to take over the RNC reigns rather than run for President.

The case the GOP elders plan to make to Barbour is that he would be able to make an immediate impact on his party at a critical juncture.

Part of the logic of the plan is that Barbour would stay in the job through the election cycle. Customarily, the party’s presidential nominee would install his or her own pick some time in 2012.

“The other potential nominees would probably be very relieved that Haley wasn’t running, so wouldn’t drop in their own person in 2012 to run the committee,” the source said.

If the GOP somehow unseated President Barack Obama, Barbour could get a plum job like ambassador to London.

The following is a recent NEWSMAX interview where Barbour assesses the 2010 races:

Do you think he'll Bite or does he want the big enchilada?

i don't know much about Haley Barbour, so I can't comment. He does remind me of Fred Thompson with his speech and mannerisms.

i look at it this way. If it limits the 2012 field and benefits Romney, I'm all for him getting the job.

I like Barbour. Not as much as Romney though.

Barbour would be great. Like Romney, he has friends with deep pockets and would be a great RNC Chief.

Who are the GOP heavyweights?

I can see how that Barbour and Huckabee may be considered heavyweights, but who else?
