Politics May Be Behind Military's Skewing Islamic State Intelligence

War On Terror: The U.S. Central Command apparently embellished intelligence reports to make it appear that we're winning our war against the Islamic State. Have top brass been intimidated into Obama lapdogs?

America would obviously stop being America if the military were not subordinate to our elected leaders. But what about the flip side of the equation, as when an administration cows elements of our armed forces into such submission, they pretend a president's misguided military strategy is working when it's failing?

The New York Times reports that the Pentagon's inspector general has launched an investigation into whether officials at CENTCOM, which oversees our efforts against the Islamic State, "were improperly reworking the conclusions of intelligence assessments prepared for policy makers, including President Obama," according to several government officials who spoke to the Times anonymously.

The CENTCOM officials' apparent motive was "to provide a more optimistic account of progress," the paper reported.

The seriousness of this should not be taken lightly. This is something an enemy of the U.S. would want to do: make our leaders think we were winning a war when we are actually losing it.

Months or years could be spent pursuing the wrong course against IS — in this case, perhaps, concluding that a U.S.-led ground war is not necessary. Then, when discovery is finally made that we've been on the wrong course, IS may have consolidated its control over vast territories. Or it may have grown strong and stable enough to refocus on attacking U.S. targets outside and within our homeland.
