Group That Protects Nazis Thinks Christians Are The Problem

The American Civil Liberties Union has held its nose and famously defended Skokie, Ill., Nazis, Democrat George Wallace during his segregationist days, and the Ku Klux Klan. But now it's decided that it will not defend Christians. Apparently Christian convictions are something the ACLU can't abide by.

The announcement came last week in the form of a Washington Post op-ed written by ACLU Deputy Legal Director Louise Melling. She said that the ACLU can no longer support the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, passed in 1993 by a Democratic Congress (unanimously in the House) and signed by a Democratic president, because it "could be used to discriminate against others."

Particularly galling to Melling is the fact the RFRA was used to relieve businesses from their (forced) legal duty to provide insurance coverage for contraceptives to employees if doing so violated the businesses' religious beliefs.

What she is really saying is the ACLU will now defend only those religious beliefs and religious groups that it agrees with. And, of course, she dances right over a detail that she doesn't want to think about: Hobby Lobby insurance still covers 16 types of contraceptives , just not those it considers to be life-terminating abortifacients.
