Second Amendment Story: 'Guns in Trunks' Bill Set to Pass in Tennessee

A Tennessee bill allowing gun owners to keep weapons in their vehicles in parking lots at work, school or government offices is set to win final approval from state lawmakers as early as Thursday, despite strong opposition by local business groups. 

Tennessee gun-rights groups have been pushing for a "safe commute" bill for years, but without success thanks to lobbying by the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce & Industry, other business groups and big employers, such as Volkswagen, which has a plant in Chattanooga.

But this year the legislation, known as the "guns in trunks" bill, has moved quickly through the Republican-dominated General Assembly, passing overwhelmingly in the Senate this month and being approved by the House Civil Justice Committee last week with little discussion. A vote on the House floor is scheduled Thursday.

Update: The Tennessee House passed the bill 72-22. It is now on the way to Gov Bill Haslam for review and signature.
