Poverty Chart by State With and Without Social Security

I came across this interesting chart in the March 2013 Edition of the 'AARP Bulletin'.

Its hard to imagine how anyone could survive in their later years on $10.788 (single) or $13,598 (Couple) without the benefit of additional supplementary Government Assistance and/or continuing to work to supplement their SS.

The state-by-state figures below are eye opening and prove that it obviously pays off to develop good habits like saving for retirement during one's lifetime:
