The candidate’s usually buttoned-up and bullet-point-laden stump speech here on Thursday afternoon was punctuated by a series of playful, impromptu moments as Mr. Romney reacted to a driving rain, contemplated someday moving to Florida and stopped his speech to retrieve a campaign check.
As he was about to begin his speech, Mr. Romney noticed that a group of about a dozen people sitting at the edge of a giant tent were exposed to a sudden storm. He quickly morphed into crowd coordinator, instructing the audience, step by step, how to make way for the wet supporters, whom he invited onstage.
There, they immediately blocked a carefully constructed political prop — a national debt clock. Mr. Romney didn’t seem to care.
