Is Behavioral economics a threat to limited government?

After a long break, here is finally another post.

This time, I'm going to deal with a subject I've began to interest myself in in the past months: Behavioral economics.

Don't know what it is? Nothing to be embarrassed about. Basically, normally in economics we assume humans are rational. However, we all know humans aren't fully rational - we don't know everything for starters, so whatever rationality we have is very bounded by limited information. And even then, we're not fully rational - we don't save enough for retirement, we buy houses we can't afford etc. Why? When? How can irrational behaviors be prevented? These are all questions that behavioral economics deals with.

Behavioral economics is a relatively new field, that really only began to form in the last 30 years or so. Leftists love it: Surely human irrationality proves government intervention is necessary! And in fact, most behavioral economists are left-winged (though in fairness, that goes for most of academia). They assume that human irrationality must justify government intervention. Let's say humans aren't smart enough not to buy houses we can't afford - then the natural solution according to most behavioral economists is to have the government step in and ban people who can't afford houses from buying them (no, no-one's actually suggested that - it's just an example, but you get the idea).
I don't think that idea holds. Behavioral economics is a useful and exciting science. But here below is three reasons why behavioral economics is not a threat to free markets and limited government:

1) What is rational anyway?
Rational means maximizing utility (an economic term that roughly translates to "happiness" or "satisfaction"). But how do you prove that a person is or isn't maximizing his or her utility? How do we prove whether a smoker is maximizing his utility by smoking? It surely seems like an irrational habit to most non-smokers (including myself). The pain of lung cancer surely must surpass any utility gained from the smoking itself, right? Well, it may be easy to think so - I certainly don't see the point of smoking - but how do we really know this is true for each individual person? And if we're not sure whether smoking really is an irrational behavior, what right do we have to regulate it?
(Of course, we could still regulate smoking in public places due to the harmful effects of second hand smoking etc, but that's a different issue).

2) Politicians - not so rational
While behavioral economics have managed to find several flaws with the way consumers act, an area that has been studied much less is  the flawed decision-making of politicians. Politicians base their own decisions not only on the good of the country, or the good of the consumers, but also on the good of, well, themselves. To use economic language, their utility is not only a function of the welfare of the nation they have been set to govern. A politician set to design a tax on tobacco is almost certain to design it in a way that is politically beneficial for him - whether that means setting a too high tax or a too low tax. It is actually not impossible that political intervention manages to screw up the marketplace even more than it was initially.
The problem with behavioral economists (not; economists, not economics) is that every time they find a problem with the market place, they assume that government intervention can solve it. Well, guess what, politicians don't have complete information either, and just because there is a problem doesn't mean they're able to fix it.
As an economist, to support government intervention every time you see a problem is taking the easy way out. "Just let the government fix it" is the academic equivalent to calling for delivery instead of cooking your own food: It's easy - but it's not healthy. Instead, what economists should be working on is developing solutions within a free market context. Maybe there is a free market way to educate people about the value of saving for retirement? I don't know, but given that the free market is where the smartest brains and the most creative minds are, maybe that's the best place to start. The chance that some clever entrepreneur can work out a way to solve the social security crisis is certainly greater than the chance that a government bureaucrat will be able to fix it.
Additionally, we need to consider that voting is a consumer decision too, and one that is often made in an irrational way. Voters have a tendency to choose politicians they can relate to - which is why Barack Obama gets 90 % of the black vote and Mitt Romney will get a similar share of the Mormon vote. This is absolutely and totally irrational - sure you'd be happier with a president whom you may not be able to relate to very well, but who just might be able to fix the economy? And since voters aren't voting in a rational way (and voting for whoever you can relate to is just one example of irrational decision-making), how can we count on those elected to fix the irrationalities caused by voters when they make consumption decisions? Most politicians wouldn't have been elected had it not been for irrationality.

3) Government - a source of irrational consumer behavior
Lastly, I think we need to critically examine how governments are actually causing economically irrational behavior. Or rather I should say; government dependency.
Let's take for example the drug addict who keeps having more and more kids, knowing the government will pay for them (and, indirectly, pay for the drug addict's drugs). This wouldn't happen had it not been for the nanny state. It's a destructive, irrational behavior not caused by free markets, but by government and its liberal good intentions.
Behavioral economists also often support things like fat and sugar taxes, as overweight people just don't realize how destructive their behaviors really are - they're acting irrationally and therefore Big Government needs to step in and save them from themselves. What they miss out on is that government is also providing emergency health care for said overweight individuals. Could it be that the reason why so many obese ignore the health risk associated with their eating habits, is not because they underestimate the risk of getting a heart attack - they just figure someone else is going to pay for their health care so who cares? The same, of course, could be said for smokers.
Another example: How many times have you not heard someone say "Of course this product/service/whatever is safe - otherwise it wouldn't be legal, would it?" (of course there are several variations - but the point remains). This kind of overreliance on government - caused by individuals being used to the government acting as their nanny, protecting them from all evil - is a very dangerous irrational behavior, but not one you will see many behavioral economics talk about.
For ever 1 minute we spend researching irrational behaviors in a free market economy (and I'm not claiming they don't exist), we should spend at least 1 minute doing research on irrational behaviors that occur in the ABSENCE of a free market.

Summary

Behavioral economics makes some really good points. First of all, it makes economic models much more realistic. It makes us, economists, think of humans as, well, humans instead of robots. This is a great improvement.

As christians, we believe that humans are not only not fully rational - we're a messed up, evil race who were given a paradise but managed to screw ourselves out of it by breaking the one simple rule we had to keep: Don't eat the apple from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Hence, behavioral economics takes us much closer to a christian worldview, a worldview where humans are far from perfect. My point is; the problem is not behavioral economics in itself, and intellectual conservatives who bash the science should save themselves the time and trouble. The problem is how the left interprets and applies the findings of behavioral economics. This is not the only science that has been misused this way; political science, sociology, anthropology - all of them are fine sciences that have been taken over by the left and used as tools to promote big government. Our problem is not the science - the problem is, we have still to take them back. Instead of shunning academia and denouncing college grads as "snobs" (as one republican presidential candidate almost did), we need to get an intellectual conservative revival, similar to the one in the 1950's and 60's.

If we get our priorities straight, I know we can make that happen.

Thanks for reading.

Mitt Romney Is America's Most Successful English Major

Associated Press
It's hard being an English major: there is a widespread perception that you are wimpy, lacking real skill, a bore, doomed to a lifetime of financial struggle, crippled by insecurity, deluded into thinking you are the voice of your generation, and possibly covered in sores. Yours is the 7th-most useless major, as ranked by Newsweek, "as determined by science." Even Garrison Keillor makes fun of you, bookworm!

But chin up, impractical majors: Mitt Romney is one of you. At an event at Otterbein University in Ohio Friday, the fabulously wealthy and obnoxiously well-adjusted Republican presidential nominee admitted he was an English major. He even revealed a little of the pompous English major inside, billing the event as a "guest lecture," instead of an unpretentious campaign speech. Further, Romney told the college kids, "as an English major I can say this, as an English major your options are you better go to grad school," Politico's Ginger Gibson reports.

In Ohio, Romney Urges Young People To Take Economic Risks

(Photo: Jae C. Hong / AP)
WESTERVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Mitt Romney on Friday encouraged young Americans facing bleak job prospects to "take risks" — and even borrow money from their parents — to help improve their economic fortunes.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee noted that the nation's economy is recovering but blamed President Barack Obama for presiding over the "most anemic and tepid" comeback since the Great Depression. Continuing his recent focus on younger voters, Romney said Obama's policies are making it harder for college graduates to be successful.
"This kind of decisiveness, this attack of success is very different than what we've seen in our country's history," Romney told students and supporters gathered at Otterbein University in central Ohio. "We've always encouraged young people — take a shot, go for it, take a risk and get the education, borrow money if you have to from your parents, start a business."

New Polls: Romney Surging With Independents

Mitt Romney is building a huge lead over President Barack Obama among the vital independent voters who are likely to decide November’s election, a new Fox News poll shows.

The two men are tied in the survey, each receiving 46 percent support, but Romney now holds a 13-percentage point lead over the president among voters who say they are not tied to either party.

That is more than double the lead that the presumptive GOP candidate had with independents just two weeks ago in a similar poll. When the question was asked in an earlier poll in March the two candidates were tied among independents.

Former Rick Santorum Campaign Manager Mike Biundo Joins Mitt Romney

Former Rick Santorum campaign manager Mike Biundo has joined the Mitt Romney campaign. He will be serving as Romney’s deputy coalitions director, organizing conservative voters for the former rival’s campaign.

The post was first reported by the New Hampshire Union Leader and announced by another New Hampshire native, Romney’s spokesperson Ryan Williams.
“Mike Biundo ran an outstanding campaign for Senator Santorum, and we are excited that he has agreed to bring his considerable skills and abilities to our team. His decision to join Governor Romney’s campaign is another indication that Republicans are coalescing around Governor Romney’s pro-jobs, pro-growth message and quickly uniting to defeat President Obama,” Williams said in a statement.

ABC Ignores Its Own Revelation That Obama Was 'Wealthy' While Paying Off Student Loans

(ABC News)
ABC News has, thus far, ignored its own revelation that, contrary to insinuations made by Barack Obama, the then-private citizen and his wife "were making enough to be considered 'wealthy' by the president’s own definition in the years before his loans were paid off." ABC relegated this story to a posting on its website, not mentioning it on Wednesdays' World News or Nightline.

The story was similarly skipped on Thursday's Good Morning America. World News did touch on student loans, but only to accuse Mitt Romney of flip-flipping on the issue. David Muir dug up a clip of the Republican telling a college student to shop around and not expect the government to bail him out.

RNC Files Complaint Over Obama Swing State Travel

The Republican National Committee filed a formal complaint with the Government Accountability Office Wednesday, accusing the Obama administration of using taxpayer funds to campaign on President Obama's recent trip to three swing states, despite White House claims President Obama was giving speeches at official events.

"Throughout his administration, but particularly in recent weeks, President Obama has been passing off campaign travel as "official events," thereby allowing taxpayers, rather than his campaign, to pay for his reelection efforts," the complaint letter by RNC Chairman Reince Priebus read.

Fact Check: The Truth About Scytl and Votes Being Outsourced Overseas

Like many other voters I was shocked when I heard Michael Savage state on his show, "This is how Obama is going to steal the election" which is replayed in This Video.

The story went viral on Facebook and Twitter.  I thought to myself, "How could anyone allow Geoge Soros steal our votes!!"  I will admit I was so concerned that I actually wrote the Republican National Committee about the story.

I am sure you can magine my surprise and embarrassment when I found out the story was a hoax.

Good Day Sir!

Well it is about time says the GOP with a sigh of relief. The cartoons have been wonderful, nay, marvelous but like all bad things, the Newt Gingrich campaign had to end. And Newt, true to himself, chose the lowest point (and that is saying something) in his campaign to consider the end. The bridges are still smoldering and the general election between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama has been going for several weeks. When Newt pulls the plugs there will be an iPhone video camera to capture it since the embedded reporters were yanked weeks ago. What will Newt do with his $4.5 million dollar campaign bill? Probably what you would suppose a DC politician would do... declare bankruptcy and stiff his contractors. Shame on them says this observer. This wouldn't be the first time Gingrich has tried to fool America or himself. I wouldn't trust Gingrich with my sister or my wallet. He's a bonafide CreepusNincampoopus if I ever saw one but here is a look back at some of my favorite Newt moments in cartoons. Can't wait for the reunion. Stay cool Newt. Don't ever change. We should do something this summer.

Would someone please tell Gingrich & Paul, IT'S OVER???

Not only has the fat lady sung, she's developed laryngitis.

'A Better America Begins Tonight'

"A better America begins tonight." Those words hold much promise and great encouragement. Today as I labor away in the president-eat-dog world of business I am encouraged that a good and honest man is still prefered by my fellow Americans over less worthy candidates. For a brief moment during this primary I thought Newt Gingrich was going to be the party choice and I was shocked, nay, flabbergasted, that republicans could choose an immoral, self-aggrandizing, narcissist over a more competent and tempered leader like the Governor. Romney might not be your ideal candidate but he is a wholesome and respectable person whose worst vices are Diet Coke and Chocolate Milk. He's been very successful but very generous with his money and his time. He and his wife Ann have raised a decent brood that appear to be productive members of society. He is a good moral person but unlike Jimmy Carter, another moral political figure, he has strength and wisdom. Romney has the know-how and the ability to tackle huge problems and a track record that proves it. We have ourselves a great president in the making. This year it's all about the economy and my money (literally) is on the numbers guy.

Fair or not Barack Obama has been perceived as a President that apologizes for America. At times he seems to turn his back on our great American history. Barack Obama often simplifies the past and judges our founders and forefathers with a 21st century morality. We have had our ups and downs and our highlights and our mistakes. We abided slavery in the South for far too long but we paid for that sin with over 750,000 dead Americans. I'm proud that our nation fought for the freedom of slaves with such unwavering dedication and sacrifice. It's a highlight to an otherwise gruesome part of our history. We have saved the world and humanity from tyranny many times over and helped nations throw off their oppressors. We paid for the mistakes of Europe and the world with American treasure and blood. We have made our mistakes and been on the wrong side of right on occasion but America remains the greatest force for good in the world. While most Americans believe that it seems that our President wants to throw the baby out with the bathwater at times. Like America has something to be ashamed of.
Fortunately we are built on a firm foundation. It will take more than one president to destroy our defining pillars and constitution. If we correct the problems now the foundation will remain strong and keep the country from failing. Abandon our foundation and our founding principles and the nation will surely fall. Romney is a man that understands our great history and will never apologize for it. He is proud to be an American. Today it is good to see that a moral person is still electable and preferred in our great country. Today we still have hope that "a better America begins tonight."
"I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him." -- Abraham Lincoln

Was Sarah Palin Properly Vetted By The McCain Team?

Right Wingnut has initiated a debate with me in which he insists that the liberal media started pushing the meme that Sarah Palin wasn't properly vetted and that meme is now being pushed by bitter Romney supporters such as myself:
A few weeks ago, I started to notice a theme developing - designed to discredit Sarah Palin and the amount of vetting that was done prior to adding her to the ticket in 2008. Nearly every MSM article about the topic suggested that the GOP nominee would be more cautious in their vetting process to avoid making the same "mistake" the McCain campaign made.

Initially, the propagation of this false meme was mostly limited to left-wing journalists with an axe to grind. Lately, it seems that some on the right (mostly Romney supporters who are still bitter that McCain picked her over Mitt) are seizing on the opportunity to pile on.
This claim is false.

Enough With The False Narrative About Palin's Vetting

There has been ample discussion as of late about potential Vice Presidential candidates.

Here's a prime example of what I'm talking about from one of Romney's biggest backers. This individual writes for numerous websites, including the Mitt Romney Central fan site.
...Who ever Mitt Romney picks, the vetting process will be much more intense than in the past due to the shoddy vetting process the McCain team did with Sarah Palin....

Yet, Allen West is being pushed by Sarah Palin and Co. as a possible counterbalance to that moderate Mitt Romney on presidential ticket.

So why is Sarah and Rush so fond of Allen West when he is literally not that conservative?

Answer.
Rep. Allen West warned Monday that reports of the FBI’s training manual being edited to scrap portions considered offensive to the Muslim community signaled an increasingly “one-way street” level of tolerance that could lead to “cultural suicide.”

“We have to understand when tolerance becomes a one-way street, it will lead to cultural suicide and we should not allow the Muslim Brotherhood-associated groups to be influencing our national security strategy,” the Florida Republican said on “Fox & Friends.”

It's a good thing we have West protecting us from "cultural suicide." And Communists in Congress. And whatever cultural boogeyman he can think of at the moment.

Matt Lewis is exactly right. The Tea Party Conservatism being pushed by Palin, Rush, and West is nothing but rhetoric. I would add that this rhetoric is mainly intended to make the issuers of such rhetoric filthy rich beyond their wildest imaginations. West may or may not be after selling books or a post-Congress career on Fox News, but he knows fully well that the way to be "conservative" is to match Talk Radio in obnoxious, fear-mongering rhetoric.

Here's to Romney killing this kind of "conservatism."

Marco Rubio discusses Romney, the Vice Presidency, immigration and other issues on CNN's 'State of The Union' (FULL INTERVIEW 04-22-12)

Who Will Be Mitt Romney's Running Mate?

People have been speculating on who Mitt Romney will pick to have as his running mate and future Vice President. Romney has so far hasn't said much about who he will pick, but in an interview with National Review, he's said that he hasn't made a list yet but that he's in the process of making one. that he's looking for someone who can also lead the nation if necessary:
NRO: Let’s begin with your process of selecting your running mate. As you’ve interacted with elected officials throughout this primary season, have you thought about any of them as potential running mates and whether you would trust that person to be a heartbeat away from the presidency?
Mitt Romney: [Laughter.] I’m not going to give you any names!
NRO: You don’t have to give names. Just . . . has anybody piqued your interest?
Romney: There are a lot of terrific people in our party, as I’m sure you know. We will begin to put together a list of folks to do a deep-dive vetting. That’s something which Beth Myers, my former chief of staff and former campaign manager, is guiding. I’ve been very impressed with a lot of folks I’ve worked with, and I’m impressed with others that have not been in battleground states, but who nonetheless are key leaders in our party. At this point, it is a wide-open process.
NRO: Is there one trait or quality that you think is particularly important for a running mate and vice president?
Romney: The vice president has to be someone who would be seen as having the capability to become president and lead the country if that were to become necessary. That is, without question, the most important quality that you consider.

Obama Donors Closing Their Wallets

President Obama's re-election campaign is having problems with their donations. Their traditional big donation sources have backed off.  According to the New York Times:
"From Wall Street to Hollywood, from doctors and lawyers, the traditional big sources of campaign cash are not delivering for the Obama campaign as they did four years ago. The falloff has left his fund-raising totals running behind where they were at the same point in 2008 — though well ahead of Mr. Romney’s — and has induced growing concern among aides and supporters as they confront the prospect that Republicans and their “super PAC” allies will hold a substantial advantage this fall."

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's campaign continued to face outrage and claims of "wasteful spending" of taxpayer money on Friday as the candidate keeps his Secret Service detail, which could cost north of $40,000 per day.

"Newt Gingrich just needs to really do the right thing and do the particularly responsible thing and say, 'Okay, I don't need Secret Service protection anymore,'" David Williams, president of the taxpayers watchdog group Taxpayers Protection Alliance, told CNN.
