On multiple occasions, Mitt Romney has expressed concern about the threat of activist judges. Not knowing much about his record on judicial appointments, I decided to a little digging. I was surprised to find that out of 36 judicial appointments (2003-2005), only 9 were Republicans. In fact, he appointed more Democrats than Republicans. How do these activist judges advance through the court system? Mitt Romney certainly knows the answer to that question.
From Boston.com:
“Of the 36 people Romney named to be judges or clerk magistrates, 23 are either registered Democrats or unenrolled voters who have made multiple contributions to Democratic politicians or who voted in Democratic primaries, state and local records show. In all, he has nominated nine registered Republicans, 13 unenrolled voters, and 14 registered Democrats.”

Why Not Romney
If you want to waste the taxpayer's money on hearings for judges who will never be approved by the legislature, by all means run for governor of MA and give it a shot.
ReplyDeleteAre Democratic judges automatically activist judges?
ReplyDeleteI would like to have seen Romney appoint 100% solid born and bred conservative judges. Surely there's a huge supply in MA just waiting for the opportunity. Why would he pass up the hundreds of qualified, Harvard-educated, conservative, Republican judges there? Makes no sense. So disappointing.
I agree. NO SENSE.
ReplyDeleteHe could only find less than 10? Highly unlikely.
So what your saying is that he appointed because of qualifications, and not on party?
ReplyDeleteKaty bar the door. the roof is a falling. ;0
In Massachusetts:
ReplyDeleteUnenrolled = closet Republican/center-right Democrat.
It's just the way it is.
For example: places like Plymouth Ma, South Boston, Duxbury, Hingham, Quincy
All have a majority of Unenrolled as opposed to Dems or Reps.
It's a MA phenomenon. to talk like a Democrat and then when no one is looking, vote for the more conservative candidate/issue.
So, What I guess I'm saying is, if you check the records of those 13 unenrolled, I'll bet they were conservative in their judgments.
Bob, This quote from the article kind of ruins your theory...

Next thing we will hear is that some of these Romney judges were Pro Abortion and Planned Parenthood endorsed unlike Palin's picks who were 100% Pro Life.
ReplyDeleteOnly 3% of the states legislature were Republican.
ReplyDeleteTo appoint 25% of the judges Republican, that's pretty good.
Ann, do you have a link to back up that stat?
